TERRY JENKINS continued his return to form with a superb 156 finish as he edged out Jelle Klaasen 6-5 in the Dutch Darts Masters first round on Friday, as Dean Winstanley, Ronny Huybrechts and Christian Kist made strong starts to the European Tour event in Veldhoven.
Seven-time major finalist Jenkins had hit a nine-dart finish in last week's Coral UK Open Qualifiers in Wigan, as he bids to return to the world's top 16.
And the Ledbury veteran showed his class by coming from 4-2 and 5-4 down to claim a dramatic win over Dutch hope Klaasen in their opener on Friday, taking out 156 for a 12-dart finish in the deciding leg of their contest.
Jenkins now plays Ian White in Saturday's second round of the £100,000 tournament, while World Champion Michael van Gerwen will come into the event against Steve Maish, who was another 6-5 winner as he edged out youngster David Pallett on Friday.
Maish had led 3-0 before Pallett took the next four legs, and the youngster punished three missed match darts from the Essex man to force a deciding leg only for Maish to hit a 180 to set up tops as he finally sealed victory.
Dean Winstanley was the day's outstanding performer as he averaged 106.79 in a superb 6-4 win over Terry Temple, who took out finishes of 164, 136 and 120 in a strong challenge only to be out-scored by the Yorkshireman.
Winstanley, who took out 124 and an 11-darter as he took an early 3-1 lead, now plays Wes Newton in Saturday's second round in a mouth-watering contest.
Belgium's Ronny Huybrechts was another player to record a ton-plus average as he defeated Dutch debutant Kevin Voornhout 6-3, averaging 101.84 and hitting four 180s as he saw off the newcomer - who had knocked out Raymond van Barneveld in the Host Nation Qualifier.
Holland's Christian Kist, though, did win through the first round on his European Tour debut with a fine 6-2 win over Mensur Suljovic, opening the game with a 180 and reeling off four straight legs to claim victory and set up a tasty second round game with Kevin Painter.
Vincent van der Voort will also represent Holland in the second round, following his narrow win over Michael Barnard earlier on Friday as he progresses to a clash with Gary Anderson, who won the German Darts Championship a fortnight ago.
Young Belgian Dimitri van den Bergh impressed as he hit a 146 finish during his 6-2 victory over another PDC Unicorn Challenge Tour product, Josh Payne, as he moved through to face Mervyn King on Saturday.
Stuart Kellett, last year's UK Masters runner-up, will now play world number three Simon Whitlock in the second round following his 6-2 victory against Germany's Bernd Roith.
Richie Burnett hit a 139 finish in the opening leg of his 6-2 victory over Jyhan Artut, which he sealed with a brilliant ten-dart leg as he set up a second round meeting with World Championship finalist Peter Wright.
Two-time World Champion Adrian Lewis will now play youngster Jamie Lewis in the second round, with the Welsh ace overcoming Irish newcomer Glenn Spearing 6-4 in their first round game.
And Kevin Thomas completed a trio of Welshmen to win through the first round with his big 6-1 defeat of Wayne Jones, earning himself a clash with Steve Beaton - the German Darts Masters winner last September.
Andy Smith whitewashed German qualifier Fabian Herz as he moves through to meet world number five Dave Chisnall, while Darren Webster's 6-2 win over Mick Todd sees him face Jamie Caven.
Finland's Jarkko Komula came from 2-0 down to claim a 6-4 win over Mark Walsh in a see-saw contest which saw the former UK Open finalist finish 101 and 144 in fighting back from 5-2 down only to lose out in the tenth leg.
Komula, a quarter-finalist in last October's Dutch Darts Masters, now meets Paul Nicholson on Saturday, while reigning champion Kim Huybrechts opens up against Michael Mansell after the Northern Irish ace's 6-3 win over German teenager Max Hopp.
The day's other game saw youngster Joe Cullen also claim victory in a deciding 11th leg as he edged out Peter Hudson in a see-saw contest, setting up his clash with three-time World Champion John Part on Saturday.

Belgian youngster Dimitri van den Bergh impressed with a 6-2 victory over fellow emerging talent Josh Payne in the tournament's opening match. Van den Bergh won the game's opening two legs before Payne finished 115 on double 19 to reply with a 12-darter - but the Kent ace was punished for missing his chances to level in leg four as the Belgian superbly finished 146. Van den Bergh also took the next two in 14 and 15 darts to move to the brink of victory, and though Payne replied in leg seven with a 14-darter of his own, he could only watch on as his opponent sealed victory in the next with a two-dart 76 finish for another 14-dart leg.
Stuart Kellett reeled off five successive legs as he defeated Bernd Roith 6-2 in the Dutch Darts Masters. The German qualifier won the opening leg before Kellett finished 74 to level, only to be punished for missed doubles in the next as Roith moved 2-1 up. Kellett hit 180s in the next two legs as he moved ahead, then took out 81 and 79 to lead 5-2 before finishing double 18 to seal the win.
Michael Mansell saw off the challenge of German teenager Max Hopp with a 6-3 victory in their Dutch Darts Masters opener. Hopp took the opening leg with a superb 158 checkout, only for Mansell to win the next two to edge ahead, before claiming a key fourth for a 3-1 lead after the German missed his chance to level. The next two were shared before Mansell moved 4-3 up, and he punished more misses from Hopp to win a fifth leg before completing victory on double two.
Darren Webster defied three 180s from Mick Todd to pick up a 6-2 win with an impressive performance, averaging 99 in the victory. Webster defied a maximum from Todd to win the opening leg, and doubled his lead before being punished for missed doubles by the Newark ace in the third. However, a 120 finish restored Webster's cushion at 3-1 before he pushed his average up to 103 with legs of 13 and 14 darts to move to the brink of victory. Todd took out 64 to hit back, but double ten sealed Webster's progression to round two.
Steve Maish edged out youngster David Pallett in an 11-leg tussle as he set up a clash with World Champion Michael van Gerwen on Saturday night. Maish made a fine start, taking out 124 in winning the opening three legs before letting Pallett in to get off the mark, and he then took out 103 and 80 to level before edging 4-3 up. Maish levelled and took out 84 on the bull to move back ahead, only to miss three match darts at tops in the next as Pallett finished double 16 to send the game into a decider - but his opponent landed a timely 180 to leave 40 before pinning tops in the next to finally complete the win.
Jamie Lewis sneaked past Irish newcomer Glenn Spearing 6-4 to reach the second round of the Dutch Darts Masters. The pair shared the opening two legs on double 18 before Lewis moved ahead, only to see Spearing take the next two for a 3-2 lead. The next three legs also went with throw to leave the pair tied at four-all, before Lewis took out 66 on double 16 to break and move 5-4 up before punishing two misses from the Dublin thrower to force a deciding leg by landing double nine to seal his second round place against Adrian Lewis.
Jarkko Komula embarked on another run at the Dutch Darts Masters with a 6-4 win over Mark Walsh, who threatened a fightback from 5-2 down before the Finn - a quarter-finalist in Veldhoven last October - took victory. Walsh made the brighter start as he took the opening leg before hitting a 177 to leave 40 as he broke to double his lead. Komula, though, edged a scrappy third and took out 112 to level, before a 13-darter put him ahead and finishes of double two and tops moved him a leg away from the win at 5-2. Walsh superbly took out 101 and 144 on double 12 to win the next two legs, but could not continue the fightback as Komula hit a 180 and tops to claim victory.
Richie Burnett swept past Jyhan Artut 6-2 to win through to the Dutch Darts Masters second round. The Welsh ace took out a superb 139 finish to take the opening leg against the throw before doubling his lead, only for Artut to defy a 180 to win the third. Burnett, though, traded maximums with the German in the fourth before a superb 14-darter put him 4-1 up and double ten moved him a leg away from the win. Artut landed another 180 and tops as he kept his hopes alive, but Burnett killed off the game in style with an outstanding ten-darter, scoring 180, 123 and 174 before pinning double 12 for the victory.
Andy Smith breezed into the Dutch Darts Masters second round with a whitewash of German qualifier Fabian Herz, who was making only his second appearance in a competitive darts event, after his qualification for last month's German Darts Championship. Smith hit a 180 in a 12-darter to open the game in style and punished Herz in the second to double his lead on tops, before a 13-darter put him three legs clear with a second break of throw. Finishes of double five and tops gave Smith the next two legs, before he sealed a comfortable win with a 56 finish.
Kevin Thomas enjoyed a superb 6-1 win over Wayne Jones as he booked his place in the last 32 of the Dutch Darts Masters against Steve Beaton. The Welshman took out double 16 to win the opening leg and broke in the second on tops before Jones hit a 180 and double 18 as he hit back in the third. However, the Wolverhampton ace was punished for missed doubles to level the game in the fourth as Thomas stepped in on double two, and he then finished double top and double eight to move 5-1 up. Both players opened the seventh leg with 180s, and Thomas added a second maximum to set up a possible nine-darter - having hit one in last year's UK Open Qualifiers - and though he could not land a seventh treble 20, he returned to finish off a 12-dart leg to complete the win.
Home hope Vincent van der Voort held his nerve to secure a narrow 6-5 win over Michael Barnard as he reached the second round of the Dutch Darts Masters. The pair shared the opening two legs before the Dutch qualifier, aided by a 180, produced a brilliant 11-darter in leg three, only for Barnard to level and then share the next two legs, with the pair trading 180s in the sixth only to remain locked at three legs apiece. Barnard paid the price for missing his chance to break in leg seven as van der Voort moved 4-3 up, with the next two legs shared before the Romford thrower took out 116 on tops to send the game into a decider, which the Dutchman took on double 16 with his first dart for the match.
Ronny Huybrechts made an eye-catching opening to the Dutch Darts Masters with a 101.84 average and four 180s in a 6-3 win over Host Nation Qualifier Kevin Voornhout. The Belgian made a stunning start, scoring 140, 180 and 140 as he won the opening leg in 12 darts, before adding a 14-darter and another maximum as he won the third leg, taking a 3-0 cushion in only 42 darts. Voornhout - who knocked out Raymond van Barneveld in Tuesday's Host Nation Qualifiers - took two of the next three legs to hit back to 4-2 and hit a maximum in the seventh leg, only to see Huybrechts post double 12 to move a leg away from the win. Voornhout opened the eighth leg with a 180 and added a 177 to set up a possible nine-darter, and though he was unable to finish 144, he did eventually take out double four to keep the game alive. Huybrechts, though, replied with scores of 100, 180 and 139 in the next and finished double ten to complete a fine win.
Joe Cullen edged out Peter Hudson in an 11-leg thriller as he moved through to a second round clash with John Part at the Dutch Darts Masters. The pair traded 180s as Hudson took the lead, with Cullen levelling in 14 darts before moving ahead, only for Hudson to hit back and lead 3-2. Cullen then took the next two legs to move 4-3 up, and after Hudson levelled the Yorkshireman capitalised on a miss from his opponent to move a leg away from the win. Hudson hit back to force a decider, but Cullen posted double eight to claim the victory.

Kist opened the game with a 180 as he took the opening leg on double nine, with Suljovic levelling before the former Lakeside Champion added another maximum as he took the third leg. Suljovic denied a 180 from Kist as he levelled in the fourth leg, but the Dutchman took the fifth before breaking for the first time in the next on double 16. Kist then took out 101 to move 5-2 up, before trading 180s with Suljovic as he sealed victory on double top, setting up a second round clash with Kevin Painter on Saturday.
Dean Winstanley saved the outstanding performance of the Dutch Darts Masters first round for the final game as he averaged 106.79 in a superb 6-3 win over Terry Temple, who hit three ton-plus finishes in a superb game. The first two legs were shared before Winstanley took out 124 in the third and an 11-darter for a 3-1 lead, after Temple had missed tops for a 151 finish only to see his opponent take out 100. Temple replied with a 120 checkout which was bettered in the next as he finished 164 to level at three-all, with Winstanley replying with legs of 14 and 13 darts, which featured four 140s, as he moved 5-3 up. Temple finished 136 to stay in the game, but Winstanley fired in another two 140s before hitting tops for a 13-darter which sealed a fine display.
